Rising about 75 metres above the palm groves of Al-Ahsa, the largest oasis in Saudi Arabia, Jabal Al-Qarah looks at first like an unremarkable hill of weathered rock. The surprise is inside. Over millions of years, water and wind have cut a network of tall, narrow passages through the limestone, around 1.5 km in total, with walls rising up to around 30 metres and gaps of sky high above.

Because air circulates through these clefts, the caves stay at roughly 20°C all year: cool in summer, when temperatures outside top 45°C, and comfortably mild on winter evenings. Jabal Al-Qarah is one of the components of the Al-Ahsa Oasis, which UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2018 as an evolving cultural landscape.

What to see

  • The caves: a lit, partly paved route leads through the main passages, the best known being Al-Nashab cave. Some sections are narrow and you will brush the walls.
  • Rock formations: wind-sculpted columns and overhangs on the outside of the mountain, especially photogenic in the late afternoon.
  • Land of Civilisations: a heritage village and exhibition at the foot of the mountain, tracing the history of the region, with viewpoints and trails linking it to the caves.
  • The view: from the upper paths, a sweeping panorama over a sea of date palms.

Tickets and opening hours

Tickets are sold through the Land of Civilisations visitor centre at the base and cost around SAR 50 per adult, including the caves experience. The site is generally open daily from 8:00 until 22:00 or 23:00, sometimes later in holidays. Prices and hours change, so check before you go, for example on Visit Saudi.

Tip: On a hot day, come in the middle of the day for the caves, when the cool air feels best, then stay until sunset for the light on the rock formations outside.

Getting there

Jabal Al-Qarah is around 15 km east of Hofuf, the main city of Al-Ahsa, near the villages of Al-Qarah and At-Tuwaitheer. A car or taxi is the only practical way to reach it. Al-Ahsa itself is easy to get to: trains on the Riyadh to Dammam line stop at Hofuf, around 3 hours from Riyadh and about an hour from Dammam. See our getting around guide for train tickets, or compare cars for the oasis on DiscoverCars.

Good to know: The main route is well lit and partly accessible, but some passages involve steps and uneven ground. Wear closed shoes. The site is very popular with local families on weekend evenings.

Combine it with

Make a full day of Al-Ahsa: start at the Ottoman-era Qasr Ibrahim in Hofuf and the covered Al-Qaisariyah souq, then visit the caves and stay for sunset. Al-Ahsa is famous for its dates, so stop at a date shop or farm on the way. Guided day trips from the Eastern Province are listed on GetYourGuide. For other natural wonders, the cliffs of the Edge of the World near Riyadh and the canyon of Wadi Disah in the north-west are very different but equally striking. To stay overnight, search Booking.com for hotels in Hofuf.
