The Tabuk region is one of the most dramatic corners of Arabia. Its landscapes range from palm-filled canyons and red sandstone towers to granite mountains that can see snow in winter, and a quiet coastline on the Gulf of Aqaba with views across to Sinai. It is also home to NEOM, the giga-project that has made headlines worldwide. For travellers it is a superb road-trip region, best combined with AlUla or a crossing into Jordan.

Tabuk city

Tabuk is a provincial capital with a long history as a stop on pilgrim and trade routes. Tabuk Castle, an Ottoman-era fort restored as a small museum, and the old Hejaz Railway station, a reminder of the line that once ran from Damascus to Madinah, are the main sights in town. The city is also a centre for farming, and the surrounding plains are dotted with fields and orchards. Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport (TUU) has domestic flights from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.

Wadi Disah

The highlight of the region is Wadi Disah, about 200 km south of Tabuk: a deep canyon of towering sandstone pillars with a stream, palms and reeds running along its floor. The track through the valley requires a 4x4, and some sections can flood after rain, so many visitors go with a local guide: see Wadi Disah tours.

Tip: Start early, take plenty of water and fuel up in Tabuk or Disah village before you head into the canyon. Mobile signal is patchy, so download offline maps.

Mountains and coast

West of Tabuk, Jabal al-Lawz rises to over 2,500 metres and occasionally sees snow in winter. Along the Gulf of Aqaba, the coastline around Haql and Tayeb Al Ism, where steep cliffs drop to turquoise water, is excellent for snorkelling and photography. Further south, the coast continues towards Sharma, Duba and the Red Sea coast.

NEOM: what is there to see?

NEOM was announced as a vast future region including The Line, a linear city, the industrial port city of Oxagon and the mountain resort of Trojena. Plans have since been scaled back significantly: construction on The Line has been slowed or paused, the 2029 Asian Winter Games were moved away from Trojena, and several contracts have been cancelled. Island and mountain resorts that were announced are not generally open to the public. In practice, there is little for tourists to visit at NEOM itself in 2026; the natural landscapes of the region are the real draw. Check NEOM's official channels for any new openings.

Good to know: Distances are long and services sparse outside towns. Winters can be cold, especially at night in the mountains; October to April is the best season. A hire car is essential: compare car hire in Tabuk. The Durra border crossing near Haql leads to Aqaba in Jordan; see Jordan from Saudi Arabia.

Where to stay

Tabuk city has the widest choice of hotels; elsewhere expect simple hotels, chalets and campsites. Compare Tabuk hotels. A good loop is Tabuk, Wadi Disah, the coast at Duba or Al Wajh, then inland to AlUla.

Frequently asked questions

Can tourists visit NEOM?

Not in any meaningful way in 2026. The headline projects are scaled back, under construction or not open to the public. The region's canyons, mountains and coast are the reason to come.

How do I get to Wadi Disah?

Drive about 200 km south from Tabuk. The final canyon track needs a 4x4, so many visitors book a local guide or tour.

When is the best time to visit Tabuk?

October to April. Winters are cool to cold, with occasional snow on Jabal al-Lawz, while summers are hot inland.
